Second Quarter Housing Starts Down in BarrieTORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 10, 2012) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary second quarter 2012 new home construction figures for the Barrie Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) today. Builders started 186 homes in the most recent quarter, down from the 368 starts in the second quarter of 2011. Single-detached homes, rows, and apartments represented the majority of new construction. Two semi-detached home starts occurred this quarter.
"Total starts are down this quarter compared to last year due to fewer apartment starts," said CMHC's Market Analyst, Edgard Navarrete. "Apartment starts are very volatile in Barrie, since a large building can generate a high number of starts in some quarters while in other quarters, there are no apartment starts. In the same quarter last year, a significant number of apartment starts pushed up the total number of starts. Yet, compared to the same quarter last year there are more starts of all other housing types except apartments."
