Government of Canada/Public Works — March 14, 2012
Government Working With Industry to Buy SmarterGATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 14, 2012) - The Government of Canada is improving how it procures goods and services and is engaging suppliers as it develops new procurement strategies for goods and services touching every Canadian industry, today announced the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women.
"The Government of Canada is asking industry how to improve the way we buy goods and services for Canadians," said Minister Ambrose. "We want to make procurement simpler where possible, faster where prudent and more flexible wherever opportunities present themselves."
Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has started a major review of the 31 categories of goods and services that it commonly procures for departments and agencies and for which the Government of Canada does most of its procurement. The review is in its first phase—consulting with industry, suppliers and government departments on how it buys goods and services in 15 key categories.
"We're listening to suppliers, so that we can buy smarter and get better value for taxpayers, while improving access for small businesses," said Minister Ambrose.
PWGSC awards more than $14 billion a year in contracts to Canadian suppliers, and this initiative will help leverage government contracting to support Canadian businesses and deliver the best value to Canadians.
The review covers items such as clothing, food and communications services. The remaining categories will be reviewed in the next phases. Through this initiative, the Government of Canada will continue to engage industry and government departments as it implements these strategies and reviews the other categories.
