Cape Breton reserve highway work begins

MEMBERTOU, N.S.

Work is underway on a $7 million highway interchange that will link a Cape Breton reserve to a provincial highway and nearby land it owns.

Membertou Chief Terry Paul says the interchange will provide increased opportunities for commercial development and provide access to land to be used for new housing developments.

With 150 families on a waiting list for new homes, Paul has promised to build 125 homes over the next five years. Membertou owns land south of the community, on the opposite side of Highway 125.

The federal government and the province will each provide $3 million for the interchange project, while Membertou’s contribution is $1 million.
