Construction Sector Council forms planning committee to assist in future governance

OTTAWA

As the Construction Sector Council (CSC) prepares to lose its federal funding after March 2013, the organization has been working to find a more sustainable model so it can continue to provide Labour Market Information (LMI) and other services to the construction industry.

In a recent update on the CSC’s website, the organization informed stakeholders that it has achieved some milestones towards reaching that goal.

Many industry stakeholders have voiced their concerns about the loss of the CSC’s LMI program to various government representatives. The CSC encouraged industry stakeholders to continue this dialogue. The CSC has formed a Planning Committee made up of national industry organizations to develop a new governance structure.

The Planning Committee consists of representatives from: Building and Construction Trades- AFL CIO; Christian Labour Association of Canada; Construction Owners Association of Alberta; Merit Canada; National Construction Labour Relations Alliance; Progressive Contractors Association of Canada and the Canadian Construction Assocaition. A Terms of Reference for the new governance structure has been developed and agreed to at the Planning Committee level.

The Planning Committee is consulting with their constituencies to gain a commitment to form the new Board of Directors and to financially contribute to the operation of the new governance structure. Several positive responses have been received, CSC reported.

The CSC Board of Directors has passed a motion to transition to the new governance structure.

The federal government is expected to launch a new Grants and Contributions Program and the CSC said it is preparing to respond to a call for concepts to develop an LMI for the Canadian construction industry.

“We feel that the work we are doing to establish a new governance model will put us in a good position to be considered for this funding,” said the CSC in the update.

The CSC is working on the 2013 LMI forecast, expected in January 2013. Another update is expected this fall.
