VIDEO: Larry Beasley at "The City in 2050"

Larry Beasley, internationally renowned urban planner, founding principal of Beasley and Associates Planning Inc and Vancouver's former Director of Planning, was on hand at "The City at 2050," a seminar held on July 11 which brought together several generations of city planners.

Beasley explained that while Vancouver has pioneered many new ideas and approaches to urbanism, it is in danger of being eclipsed by other cities who have both adopted Vancouver’s ideas and gone further, while Vancouver uses the same tools that it developed decades ago.

Beasley also pointed to the suburbs as the next frontier for new ideas and experiments in densification. Clearly people want to live in the suburbs so it behooves planners to find out what they want and find a way to make those desires work within a sustainable framework, he said.

Beasley also stressed the importance of planners and the builders working together in a more integrated fashion, and pointed out that the construction industry are the ones putting boots to the ground and risking their money on a finished product.
