City of Ottawa to update transportation, infrastructure plans

Ottawa City Council has approved statements of work for updates to three documents intended to guide growth over the next 20 years.

The Transportation Master Plan includes updates to the pedestrian and cycling plans, as well as prioritization of transit and road projects, the city stated in a recent press release.

The update to the Official Plan will focus on “ensuring that future urban and suburban intensification projects are built to a higher level of urban design.” Other areas of focus include encouraging the redevelopment of properties around Tunney’s Pasture Station to Blair Station as part of the light rail transit project.

It will also include growth strategies for the rural villages.

The third document to be updated is the Infrastructure Master Plan.

The updated documents are scheduled to be put before council before the end of 2013.

“It is not expected that this review will require changes to Ottawa’s urban boundary, as a preliminary analysis indicates there is an adequate supply of land for residential and commercial development already within the urban area,” the city said in a press release.

In 2001, the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton became a one-tier municipality now known as the City of Ottawa. The city proper now extends about 100 kilometres from east to west (from immediately west of Clarence Rockland to immediately east of Arnprior) and about 50 kilometres from the downtown area in the north to Kemptville in the south.
