Replacement of Wellington Bridge in P.E.I. is now complete, reports province
WELLINGTON, P.E.I.
The replacement of the Wellington Bridge in Prince Edward Island is now complete.
The bridge, on Route 124 in Wellington, P.E.I., was built in 1956 and had reached the end of its service life. The new bridge features a longer concrete span, which replaces the steel structure that was in place. The project began on April 30, 2012.
“The number one priority of my department is to provide safe and efficient roads and bridges for the benefit of Islanders,” said Robert Vessey, P.E.I.’s minister of transportation and infrastructure in a news release. “These sorts of strategic investments not only improve safety for residents, but they help drive the economy in rural parts of the province.”
According to the Request for Qualifications, the project consisted of excavation; slope protection; environmental controls; cold plane and stockpile asphalt; demolition and removal of existing structure; concrete formwork and accessories; concrete reinforcement; cast-in-place concrete; pre-cast concrete structure installation; waterproofing membrane; structural steel barrier; pre-cast concrete retaining wall installation; rip rap; sanitary piping and manholes; and road work complete with asphalt paving.
