Bird Construction inks $32.5 million contract to build Priestville, Nova Scotia jail
The Nova Scotia justice department recently announced that Bird Construction Inc. (TSX:BDT) of Toronto has been awarded a $32.5-million contract to build a 200-bed jail in Priestville, about 60 kilometres east of Truro.
The province opened bids for the 81,000-square-foot project earlier this year.
“Construction will begin in a few weeks,” the province stated in a press release today.
Earlier this year, Nova Construction Company installed sewer, storm and water lines, in addition to driveways and parking lots.
The jail will be open in mid-2014 and is intended to replace correctional facilities in Antigonish and Cumberland counties.
“It will feature six day rooms, health and dental suites, state-of-the-art closed-circuit tv monitoring, electronic drug detection systems and superior sight lines,” the justice department stated.
The total project cost for the facility, including the site preparation, is $38.5 million.
A spokesperson stated in an e-mail to DCN that the Bird contract is $32.5 million.
