Bidding open for Priestville, Nova Scotia jail construction

The Nova Scotia justice department recently announced it is accepting bids from seven general contractors to build a 75,000-square-foot, 200-bed jail in Priestville, just outside New Glasgow and about 60 kilometres east of Truro.

Bidding is open to seven pre-qualified contractors, the province stated in a press release. Bids are due May 7.

“Site preparation began in September 2011 with Pine Breeze Logging Services clearing trees and preparing the land for construction,” the justice department stated. “From November 2011 to April 2012, Nova Construction Company installed sewer, storm and water lines, as well as driveways and parking lots. The Town of New Glasgow and the Municipality of the County of Pictou brought storm and sewer infrastructure to the site.”

Construction is expected to begin in June and completed in 2014. It will replace facilities in Antigonish and Cumberland.
