Hampstead, Quebec to spend $4 million on road construction
The town council of Hampstead, Quebec, on the island of Montreal, approved a three-year capital works program that includes $4 million on road rehabilitation in 2012.
Using proceeds from the sale of the MacDonald Avenue Fire Station, the town will embark on what it calls an ambitious capital works program from 2012 to 2015.
This includes $650,000 in 2012 and $830,000 in 2013 on watermains and sewers.
The capital program was approved by council Dec. 19. Hampstead, which is about halfway between downtown Montreal and Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (formerly known as Dorval), is nearly surrounded by the City of Montreal but is not one of its 19 boroughs, or arrondissements.

Road construction in the town will include the reconstruction of Fleet Road and major repaving projects for sections of Queen Mary Road and Netherwood Crescent.
Last August, the town wanted to rezone the MacDonald Fire Station to allow construction of a 16-storey condominium tower. At the time, it had obtained a legal opinion to the effect that the town owns the station, which was transferred to the City of Montreal in 2002 after a municipal merger but returned to the town after the 2005 de-merger.
