R.V. Anderson Associates wins awards for Sudbury, Ontario projects
TORONTO
R.V. Anderson Associates Ltd. has won two Project of the Year Awards from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) for projects undertaken for the City of Greater Sudbury.
The first award, in the “environment, greater than $10 million” category, went to the Levack and Onaping water supply project. R.V. Anderson optimized the water supply systems for two smaller communities by providing project management, design and engineering services during construction of $18.5 million worth of new infrastructure.
These new features included an elevated water storage tank, a pressure-control facility and booster station, a groundwater well and expanded well facility and 6.6 kilometres of watermains that crossed the Onaping River twice.
R.V. Anderson’s “unique” approach of separating the work into six concurrent construction contracts resulted in a schedule reduction of six to eight months, allowing the project to successfully meet a regulatory deadline. Innovative design allowed construction cost savings of approximately $200,000, while careful sequencing permitted the existing water system to remain in service throughout construction despite the scale and complexity of the work.
The second winner, in the “structures, greater than $10 million” category was the Sudbury south end sewage rock tunnel project, R.V. Anderson provided project management, design and engineering services during construction of an all-encompassing solution to address local basement flooding and sewage overflows into local watercourses. This 6.5-kilometre-long rock tunnel sewer system took 42 months to construct at a cost of $31 million.
R.V. Anderson’s innovative tunnel approach built upon Greater Sudbury’s existing tunnel system and allowed the city to save an estimated $300,000 per year for the next 60 years, or approximately $17 million. The project team effectively addressed many challenges, such as continuous blasting through bedrock more than 25 metres below the surface, connecting “live” to the existing sewage tunnel system and decommissioning six separate lift stations and diverting flow into the tunnel.
“We are pleased to have our firm once again recognized for its ingenuity and innovation,” says Ken Morrison, president of R.V. Anderson. “We are committed to providing quality engineering services for sustainable infrastructure development and appreciate the industry’s recognition of our work.”
Employee-owned R.V. Anderson Associates has provided professional engineering, operations and management services since 1948. The organization comprises environmental and infrastructure specialists for water, wastewater, transportation and urban development.
