Mississauga awards salute excellence in urban design

A plastic surgery clinic on Hurontario Street and a community centre and arena renovation in Streetsville won awards of excellence in the city of Mississauga’s 2009 urban design awards.

Designed to respect the privacy and dignity of patients, the clinic sits on a large landscaped site. Principal rooms overlook a courtyard. Water flows around the building into the court, “creating a sense of calm.” The project team included Teeple Architects Inc. and landscape architects The MBTW Group.

The Vic Johnston Community Centre and Streetsville arena project preserved the original arena structure while upgrading the facility. Stone columns invoke a sense of heritage while large windows provide “a transparent screen.” The team included Parkin Architects Ltd. and John George Associates.

Three Awards of merit were presented:

Daniels FirstHome Eglinton West (efficient design). The project consists of two types of stacked townhouses. Vehicles are parked at the rear of the townhouses in covered garages which also serve as private outdoor spaces. Locally produced materials that require minimal maintenance and have long life expectancies were used. The team included Graziani + Corazza Architects and LandArt Design.

Eve condominium (significance, city-wide scale). The 32-storey building is the second tower of a three-phase development designed to reinforce the prominence of the Mississauga skyline. The team included E.I. Richmond Architects Ltd. and Alexander Budrevics & Associates Ltd.

Watercolours community (execution and context). The 53.8 hectare site was transformed from an oil storage tank facility into an upscale residential community in the Lorne Park area. Existing natural features such as a woodlot were combined with parks and open spaces to create a pedestrian-friendly environment. The team included landscape architects STLA Inc.

Jurors included Paul Cravit of CS & P Architects, Sol Wassermuhl of Page+Steele/IBI Architects and Sibylle von Knobloch of NAK Design Group.
