Bodies found at site of Hangzhou City tunnel collapse
HANGZHOU, CHINA
Rescuers have found the bodies of five construction workers at a collapsed subway construction site in east China’s Hangzhou City. Sixteen people still missing are all believed to be construction workers and likely dead as well, report authorities.
A 75-metre-long section of the subway tunnel under construction, in the provincial capital of Zhejiang, collapsed on Saturday, Nov. 16 trapping workers and creating a huge crater where 11 vehicles were trapped.
Water from a nearby river flowed into the tunnel soon after the cave-in accident and levels reached six metres in depth at one point.
“There is a slim chance for the survival of trapped workers because of heavy flooding in the crater,” said spokesman Wang Guangrong.
China Railway Construction Group Co. Ltd. has summoned its experts to carry out a thorough safety examination of the site, said Bai Zhongren, vice-president of the company.
