Ottawa’s Congress Centre prepares to set green example
The Ottawa Congress Centre (OCC) is scheduled for demolition as of September 2008. The centre was built in 1983 as part of a downtown-core revitalization project.
Construction of the new 400,000-square-foot, $159-million LEED certified building is slated to start in February 2009. The project is expected to be completed by April 2011.
The contract for the design-build project will be awarded on August 2008 to either EllisDon Corporation or PCL Constructors Canada Inc.Each firm’s proposal must offer solutions for energy efficiency and innovative design.
Patrick Kelly, president of the OCC, strongly believes that the new building, which will greatly enhance the urban landscape, will also improve the quality of Ottawa’s downtown experience for its citizens and tourists alike. The new congress centre is also expected to affirm Ottawa’s position as a strong Tier II convention destination
