Seven workers killed in Indian landslide, others still missing

SRINAGAR, India

At least seven workers died after a landslide swept through a mountainous region in Kashmir where they were helping to build a highway.

The landslide happened about 160 kilometres southeast of Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu-Kashmir state. The landslide was apparently triggered by the construction work, when part of the mountain was sliced off to make way for the new road.

Police official state the chances of finding the missing workers alive are slim. Seven bodies have already been pulled from the heap of boulders, rocks and loose earth.

The all-weather highway project is intended to connect the Kashmir valley with Jammu, the state’s winter capital.
