The new Pitt River Bridge is under construction just outside Vancouver, British Columbia.

Concrete support column topples at Pitt River Bridge project

RICHARD GILBERT

Workers check out the rebar of a concrete support column for the Pitt River Bridge outside Vancouver that toppled over in the early morning hours of April 14.

A crane operator sliced through a cable holding up the support pylon at about 6:30 a.m. during a concrete pour. No one was hurt in the incident.

When completed, the new 16-lane, cable-stayed bridge will replace an existing swing bridge over the Pitt River to connect the communities of Port Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows.

The bridge will provide up to 16 metres of vertical marine clearance, along with facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.
