Falling crane cuts power in Manila

MANILA

A falling construction crane cut an electricity transmission line and plunged most of the Philippine capital into a three-hour blackout last Friday.

The outage in about 70 per cent of metropolitan Manila shortly after 9 a.m. halted trains and disrupted traffic, leaving commuters stranded throughout the city.

A spokesman for the state-run National Transmission Co., Arvee Villafuerte, said the power supply was fully restored about three hours later.

Villafuerte said the outage was caused by a crane that cut a cable in a Manila suburb, triggering an automatic shutdown at several power plants.
