Court levies $250,000 fine against production company in worker death
TORONTO
A Vancouver-based film production company was fined $250,000 last week for the death of a worker who was crushed on a set for the movie Jumper.
The worker was killed and another was seriously injured on Jan. 25, 2007, when a crew was dismantling the set in Toronto. Four workers were sorting lumber debris when frozen sand and gravel adhering to a wall broke away in large slabs and fell on top of two workers.
Vibrations of nearby heavy equipment were found to have contributed to the separation and collapse. Neither workers nor supervisors were wearing protective head gear.
Jumper Productions Ltd. pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice to three counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
