Alberta court fines CVA Canada Inc. over $300,000 in death of worker
RED DEER
A Red Deer court has been told a fine imposed on a company in the death of a worker will help keep his memory alive through a college endowment fund.
CVA Canada Inc. was fined more than $300,000 over the death of worker Robert Jonathan Makortoff, 35, in August 2005.
CVA pleaded guilty in provincial court through its lawyer Chris Rickards to failing to ensure the safety and health of Makortoff.
The charge was laid last fall under the Occupational Health and Safety Act following a lengthy investigation into the death.
Makortoff, who was not wearing a respirator, passed out while checking insulation inside a nitrogen tank designed to be pulled behind a truck.
