Equipment and operators from Murray Demolition were called in to move debris while emergency personnel looked for hot spots in the unstable buildings left after a fire on Toronto’s Queen Street West gutted six businesses and brought down an entire three-storey building last week.
The six-alarm blaze started at dawn on Wednesday, February 20 and tore through almost a full city block of Queen Street between Portland and Bathurst Streets. No one was injured in the fire, but about 60 people have lost either jobs or homes.
More than 40 emergency vehicles and over 150 emergency workers were needed to fight the fire.
Architectural experts are trying to look on the bright side, pointing out that the demolition offers an opportunity to rebuild a historic part of the city. Preserving the neighbourhood’s original character while incorporating the latest and greenest building technology will be necessary.
