State of New York and Amtrak settle contract dispute and lawsuit

ALBANY. N.Y.

New York State and Amtrak have resolved a contract dispute and a federal lawsuit, officials of the state’s Department of Transportation announced.

Money will be released to improve tracks near the George Washington Bridge and to create long-range plans to speed travel between Manhattan and Albany.

The suit involved a plan for a Turboliner line in the Hudson corridor that ran years behind schedule and over budget before being abandoned. Under terms of the settlement, Amtrak will pay New York State US$20 million.

Amtrak is providing US$6 million for the George Washington Bridge project, which officials said would save passengers two minutes a ride.
