Ontario government kicks in additional funding for northern green building education

SUDBURY

The provincial government is kicking in $2.5 million for two northern Ontario projects that will help teach principles of sustainable construction.

Funding worth $1.5 million has been committed for an innovation and commercialization park being built by the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology.

Another $1 million will be invested to help establish a sustainable energy centre at Cambrian College.

The two projects are not directly related, but both will contribute to bettering the economy - and the workforce - in northern Ontario.

NORCAT plans to start construction as soon as next month on a park that will provide small and medium enterprises with space to develop new technology, products and processes.

The sustainable energy centre will help prepare students for careers in the fields of green building, energy efficiency and resource conservation.

The college is launching a new three-year diploma in energy systems technology.

Twenty-four students will start classes in the program next week.
