Amusement park eyes land at old airport

Mirabel terminals could be converted starting this fall

Montreal

Aeroports de Montreal and Europe’s I-Parks-Oger International consortium have inked a memorandum of understanding for redevelopment of the former passenger facilities at Montr<0x00E9>al-Mirabel International Airport.

Plans call for creation of an indoor recreational multiplex, covering more than 100,000 square metres. The initial phase of the AeroDream project will cost an estimated $100 million.

It will be financed by private sector and institutional funding.

Conversion of the terminal is to start this fall.

The proposed concept, based on the theme of water and outer space, includes:

Four or five geodesic domes equipped with spherical screens, that will send visitors “cruising” over distant planets.

A giant aquarium that will plunge visitors into undersea worlds, as they choose their own path through a tunnel made of non-deforming acrylic.

An indoor beach, creating a tropical atmosphere.

A fitness centre featuring spa, hummum, sauna and bath treatments.

State-of-the-art cinemas.

The complex also will feature a mall/galleria; arcades offering giant-screen gaming; an aquatic-themed disco/karaoke with laser/video; restaurants, bars and brasseries overlooking the beach and aquarium area; and a museum, interactive exhibition hall and television studio.

There also will be a children’s play area including a day-care for toddlers.

The concept currently is being refined.

All of the elements of the former terminal complex will be used, including the terminal itself, the aeroquay, parking facilities and hotel as well as the administration building.

Renovation of the hotel is to be undertaken first. Work is to begin by June with a fall 2006 target completion date.

The memorandum calls for the consortium to sign a lease with an initial term of 25 years and two renewal options of five years each.

A draft project proposal has already been submitted to Transport Canada.
