ATCO to build athletes’ housing for 2007 Canada Winter Games
Innovative construction design leaves students a lasting legacy
CALGARY
The Yukon government has awarded ATCO Structures Inc. a $9.7-million contract to build an athletes’ housing complex for the first ever Canada Winter Games to be staged “North of 60.”
A total of 141 factory-built modules will be assembled in multi-storey configurations to accommodate 3,500 athletes during the two weeks of the 2007 Games.
“ATCO has a long history of providing innovative housing solutions to Canada’s north, on time and on budget,” said Michael Shaw, Managing Director, Global Enterprises, ATCO Group.
“This ATCO project delivers a legacy to the north by providing for the area’s long term education needs and in providing the necessary short term accommodation for the athletes of the Canada Winter Games. These units will, at the end of the Games, convert to comfortable permanent housing for Yukon College students and rural residents,” said Yukon Community Services Minister, Glenn Hart. “This is an important project for the economy of the Yukon.”
ATCO has provided modular housing and portable buildings at various Commonwealth, Universiad and Olympic Games around the world. The modules will be fabricated at ATCO’s manufacturing facilities in Alberta and transported to Whitehorse at the same time the permanent foundations are being completed at the Yukon College site. This dual activity shortens the construction schedule considerably and is the best way to complete the project within the compressed time schedule leading up to the opening ceremonies.
“We expect the first units to arrive by November 2005 and the whole complex to be completed next spring,” said Chris Morrisey, General Manager, 2007 Winter Games. “Time is still an important consideration with the completion deadline of November 1, 2006, but with the project team that has been assembled, we are confident that the athletes village will be on time and on budget.”
The 2007 Canada Winter Games will be held February 24 to March 10, 2007, with an estimated 3,500 athletes, coaches and officials.
ATCO Structures, part of the ATCO Group of Companies, has manufactured, sold and leased workforce housing and modular buildings since 1947 in more than 100 countries.
